A definability theorem for first order logic

چکیده

In this paper, we will present a definability theorem for first order logic. This theorem is very easy to state, and its proof only uses elementary tools. To explain the theorem, let us first observe that if M is a model of a theory T in a language L, then, clearly, any definable subset S ⊂ M (i.e., a subset S = {a | M |= φ(a)} defined by some formula φ) is invariant under all automorphisms of M . The same is of course true for subsets of M n defined by formulas with n free variables. Our theorem states that, if one allows Boolean valued models, the converse holds. More precisely, for any theory T we will construct a Boolean valued model M , in which precisely the T–provable formulas hold, and in which every (Boolean valued) subset which is invariant under all automorphisms of M is definable by a formula of L. Our presentation is entirely selfcontained, and only requires familiarity with the most elementary properties of model theory. In particular, we have added a first section in which we review the basic definitions concerning Boolean valued models. The Boolean algebra used in the construction of the model will be presented concretely as the algebra of closed and open subsets of a topological space X naturally associated with the theory T . The construction of this space is closely related to the one in [1]. In fact, one of the results in that paper could be interpreted as a definability theorem for infinitary logic, using topological rather than Boolean valued models.

Uniqueness, Definability and Interpolation

This paper is meant to be a comment on Beth's definability theorem. In it we shall make the following points. Implicit definability as mentioned in Beth's theorem for first-order logic is a special case of a more general notion of uniqueness. If a is a nonlogical constant, Tat a set of sentences, cx* an additional constant of the same syntactical category as a and T7t* a copy of Tat with cx* in...

On Definability in Multimodal Logic

Three notions of definability in multimodal logic are considered. Two are analogous to the notions of explicit definability and implicit definability introduced by Beth in the context of first-order logic. However, while by Beth’s theorem the two types of definability are equivalent for first-order logic, such an equivalence does not hold for multimodal logics. A third notion of definability, r...

Connection Matrices and the Definability of Graph Parameters

In this paper we extend and prove in detail the Finite Rank Theorem for connection matrices of graph parameters definable in Monadic Second Order Logic with counting (CMSOL) from B. Godlin, T. Kotek and J.A. Makowsky (2008) and J.A. Makowsky (2009). We demonstrate its vast applicability in simplifying known and new non-definability results of graph properties and finding new non-definability re...

Modal languages for topology: Expressivity and definability

In this paper we study the expressive power and definability for (extended) modal languages interpreted on topological spaces. We provide topological analogues of the van Benthem characterization theorem and the Goldblatt-Thomason definability theorem in terms of the well established first-order topological language Lt.

Definability in Logic and Rough Set Theory

Rough set theory is an effective tool for data mining. According to the theory, a concept is definable if it can be written as a Boolean combination of equivalence classes induced from classification attributes. On the other hand, definability in logic has been explicated by Beth’s theorem. In this paper, we propose two data representation formalisms, called first-order data logic (FODL) and at...

Complexity of First Order ID-Logic

First Order ID-Logic interprets general first order, nonmonotone, inductive definability by generalizing the wellfounded semantics for logic programs. We show that, for general (thus perhaps infinite) structures, inference in First Order ID-Logic is completeΠ2 over the natural numbers. We also prove a Skolem Theorem for the logic: every consistent formula of First Order ID-Logic has a countable...
